WHAT IS HYDROGEN?
- 1 proton + 1 electron = hydrogen atom
- Most abundant element in universe
- On Earth: Combined with oxygen (H₂O = water!)
- As fuel: 3x more energy than gasoline per kg!
HOW TO MAKE HYDROGEN
Gray hydrogen (BAD - 99% of current):
- Steam + methane → H₂ + CO₂
- Produces 10 kg CO₂ per kg H₂!
Green hydrogen (GOOD - the future):
- Renewable electricity + water → H₂ + O₂
- Zero emissions!
- Currently expensive ($5-7/kg) but dropping to $1.50/kg by 2030!
HOW TO USE HYDROGEN
1. Fuel cells: H₂ + O₂ → electricity + water (THAT'S IT!)
- Powers cars, trucks, buses, trains
- Only emission = pure water!
2. Direct burning: Like natural gas but cleaner
3. Industrial: Steel making, fertilizer, refining
WHY HYDROGEN MATTERS
Some things can't be electrified easily:
- Long-haul trucks (batteries too heavy)
- Ships (need high energy density)
- Steel production (needs high heat)
- Aviation (maybe, developing)
Hydrogen = solution for hard-to-electrify sectors
CHALLENGES
- Storage: Must be compressed or liquefied (-253°C!)
- Transport: Pipelines or trucks needed
- Infrastructure: Chicken-egg problem
- Safety: Flammable (but so is gasoline!)
ACTIVITIES
- Electrolysis experiment: Split water into H₂ + O₂ (with adult supervision!)
- Calculate: How much green hydrogen to replace all gray? (Hint: LOTS)
