OCEANS = LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM

Oceans cover 71% of Earth and:

• Produce 50% of oxygen we breathe
• Absorb 25% of CO₂ we emit
• Feed 3 billion people
• Regulate climate (currents move heat)
• Home to 80% of life on Earth

Without healthy oceans, humans can't survive

PROBLEM 1: PLASTIC POLLUTION

8 million tons of plastic enter oceans annually

That's 1 garbage truck per minute!

By 2050: More plastic than fish (by weight)

Where it comes from:

• Single-use bottles, bags, straws (40%)
• Fishing gear (20%)
• Packaging (20%)
• Microplastics (20%)

What it does:

• Fish eat it (then we eat the fish!)
• Turtles choke on bags
• Birds feed plastic to babies
• Breaks into microplastics (never disappears)
• Enters food chain (found in human blood!)

PROBLEM 2: OCEAN WARMING

Oceans absorb 90% of extra heat from climate change

Effects:

• Coral bleaching (50% of reefs dead)
• Fish moving to cooler waters (fisheries collapse)
• Stronger hurricanes (warm water = fuel)
• Sea ice melting (Arctic animals dying)

In YOUR 2050:

• Most coral reefs gone
• Fish populations crashed
• Coastal cities flooding Unless we act NOW

PROBLEM 3: OCEAN ACIDIFICATION

Ocean absorbs CO₂ → becomes carbonic acid → pH drops

Ocean pH:

• Pre-industrial: 8.2
• Now: 8.1 (30% more acidic!)
• 2050 path: 7.9 (70% more acidic)

Effects:

• Shellfish can't build shells
• Coral skeletons dissolve
• Food web collapses

SOLUTIONS YOU CAN DO

1. STOP PLASTIC:

• Reusable bottles, bags, straws
• Refuse single-use everything
• Pressure companies to stop plastic packaging

2. REDUCE EMISSIONS:

• Oceans warm because of CO₂
• All climate action = ocean action

3. EAT SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD:

• Check seafoodwatch.org
• Avoid overfished species
• Choose ocean-friendly options

4. BEACH CLEANUPS:

• Every piece removed = one less piece in ocean

Track ALL plastic you use for 1 week:

ACTIVITY 2: OCEAN ACIDIFICATION EXPERIMENT

Materials: Seashell, vinegar, jar

Put shell in vinegar (acid). Wait 24 hours. Shell dissolves!

This is what happens to ocean life as oceans acidify.

ACTIVITY 3: BEACH/STREAM CLEANUP

Organize cleanup:

• Collect trash from beach or stream
• Sort by type
• Weigh it
• Post results: "We removed ___ lbs of ocean-bound trash!"
