Gap Year: Climate Volunteering Around the World
Write it down. Goals guide choices.
Future Leaders (Ages 15-18) | College & Future
Gap year = year off between high school and college. For climate experience + perspective. Here's how to do it meaningfully.
WHY TAKE A GAP YEAR
Benefits:
- Real-world climate experience
- Clarify career goals
- Build skills employers want
- Gain perspective
- Grow up
- Often better college performance after
Concerns addressed:
- "Fall behind": No - most return more focused
- "Won't go to college": 90% enroll after gap year
- "Waste time": Only if unstructured (that's why planning matters!)
TYPES OF GAP YEARS

PLANNING YOUR GAP YEAR
9-12 months before high school graduation:
Step 1: Define Goals What do you want from gap year?
- Specific skills?
- Clarify career direction?
- Global perspective?
- Just experience nature?
Write it down. Goals guide choices.
Step 2: Research Programs Categories: Service, Work, Travel, Study For each program:
- Cost (some free, some $10K+!)
- Duration
- Location
- What you'll do
- Skills gained
- Housing/food included?
Step 3: Apply
- Many programs competitive (apply to 3-5)
- Strong essay (why this? what will you contribute?)
- Letters of recommendation
- Interviews
Step 4: Defer College
- Most colleges allow 1-year deferral
- Request in writing
- Explain gap year plans
- Maintain acceptance
Step 5: Fundraise (if needed)
- Some programs expensive
- Crowdfunding (GoFundMe)
- Local grants
- Work summer before
COST REALITY
Free/Paid options:
- WWOOF: Free (work for room/board)
- AmeriCorps: Stipend + education award ($6,000+)
- Peace Corps: Stipend + benefits
- Paid internships: $15-25/hour
You-pay options ($5K-15K):
- NOLS: $15K
- Semester at Sea: $25K
- Many volunteer programs: $5K-10K
Budget options exist! Don't assume gap year = expensive.
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
Hard skills:
- Field research methods
- Language fluency
- Technical skills (solar, farming, etc.)
- Project management
Soft skills:
- Independence
- Cross-cultural communication
- Adaptability
- Problem-solving

- Choose program with clear outcomes
ACTIVITIES
