Future Leaders (Ages 15-18) | College & Future

Gap year = year off between high school and college. For climate experience + perspective. Here's how to do it meaningfully.

WHY TAKE A GAP YEAR

Benefits:

  • Real-world climate experience
  • Clarify career goals
  • Build skills employers want
  • Gain perspective
  • Grow up
  • Often better college performance after

Concerns addressed:

  • "Fall behind": No - most return more focused
  • "Won't go to college": 90% enroll after gap year
  • "Waste time": Only if unstructured (that's why planning matters!)

TYPES OF GAP YEARS

1. SERVICE/VOLUNTEERING Work with environmental organizations

Examples:

  • Peace Corps (environmental projects, age 18+, 27 months)
  • AmeriCorps NCCC (conservation, 10 months, age 18-24)
  • WWOOF (organic farms worldwide, flexible)
  • SCA (Student Conservation Association, US parks, 3-12 months)
  • Earthwatch (research expeditions, 1-4 weeks)

2. WORK/INTERNSHIPS Paid experience in climate field

Examples:

  • Solar installation companies (learn trade + earn)
  • Environmental nonprofits (office experience)
  • National parks (seasonal positions)
  • Green startups (diverse roles)

3. TRAVEL/STUDY International climate programs

Examples:

  • NOLS (outdoor leadership, 3-12 months)
  • Semester at Sea (environmental focus)
  • Language + environmental study (Spain, Costa Rica, etc.)
  • Climate research expeditions

4. ENTREPRENEURSHIP Start your green business (see previous article!)

5. HYBRID Combine: 3 months volunteer + 3 months work + 6 months travel/study

PLANNING YOUR GAP YEAR

9-12 months before high school graduation:

Step 1: Define Goals What do you want from gap year?

  • Specific skills?
  • Clarify career direction?
  • Global perspective?
  • Just experience nature?

Write it down. Goals guide choices.

Step 2: Research Programs Categories: Service, Work, Travel, Study For each program:

  • Cost (some free, some $10K+!)
  • Duration
  • Location
  • What you'll do
  • Skills gained
  • Housing/food included?

Step 3: Apply

  • Many programs competitive (apply to 3-5)
  • Strong essay (why this? what will you contribute?)
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Interviews

Step 4: Defer College

  • Most colleges allow 1-year deferral
  • Request in writing
  • Explain gap year plans
  • Maintain acceptance

Step 5: Fundraise (if needed)

  • Some programs expensive
  • Crowdfunding (GoFundMe)
  • Local grants
  • Work summer before

COST REALITY

Free/Paid options:

  • WWOOF: Free (work for room/board)
  • AmeriCorps: Stipend + education award ($6,000+)
  • Peace Corps: Stipend + benefits
  • Paid internships: $15-25/hour

You-pay options ($5K-15K):

  • NOLS: $15K
  • Semester at Sea: $25K
  • Many volunteer programs: $5K-10K

Budget options exist! Don't assume gap year = expensive.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN

Hard skills:

  • Field research methods
  • Language fluency
  • Technical skills (solar, farming, etc.)
  • Project management

Soft skills:

  • Independence
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Adaptability
  • Problem-solving
  • Confidence

Clarity:

  • "I definitely want environmental law" OR
  • "Actually I hate fieldwork, prefer policy" Both valuable realizations!

COLLEGE IMPACT

Admissions: Gap year boosts application (if done meaningfully) Performance: Gap year students have higher GPAs (studies show!) Career: Earlier work experience = better internships during college

THE DOWNSIDES

Honest cons:

  • Friends start college without you (FOMO)
  • Family questions/pressure
  • Some programs expensive
  • Risk of unstructured "just travel" (less valuable)
  • Momentum loss (if not intentional)

Mitigations:

  • Structure your year
  • Stay connected with friends (they'll be home summers!)
  • Emphasize career benefits to family
  • Choose program with clear outcomes

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: Gap Year Research Create comparison chart:

  • Program name
  • Duration
  • Cost
  • Location
  • What you'll do
  • Skills gained
  • Application deadline

Research 10+ programs. Narrow to top 3-5.

Activity 2: Timeline If taking gap year:

  • Month 1-3: ___
  • Month 4-6: ___
  • Month 7-9: ___
  • Month 10-12: ___

Make specific! Not "volunteer somewhere" but "SCA trail crew in Yellowstone, May-August"

Activity 3: Pitch to Parents Write 1-page proposal:

  • What you'll do
  • Why it matters for career
  • How you'll stay safe
  • Cost + funding plan
  • How it helps college admissions

Present convincingly!
